"I have been a yoga teacher for the past three years and have practiced yoga for about six years now. Before that I was a runner and loved challenging cardio work-outs. I had an open heart surgery in 2010 that left me unable to do my regular exercise routine. I found I could no longer approach fitness with the "no pain no gain" mentality. In fact, the more I pushed, the more I backslid and further complicated any recovery. Yoga helped me learn to honor where I was, go slowly and gently and breathe in peace as I approached a healing journey.
However, after spending years of practicing yoga, and using that tool to recover much of my health and fitness, something still seemed missing. I attended my first NIA class on an invitation from a friend at church. I liked it but didn't give it too much thought. Then Sherry Coburn invited me to her Saturday morning NIA class. Again, I went thinking, "Oh this would be fun, this would be nice to support her." However, I didn't realize all the pieces of my fitness puzzle that were missing, that yoga was not addressing. The more I did NIA, the more I noticed other parts of my strength and balance and agility and overall ease in movement and mind improving. I noticed I could hike down mountains more easily--with greater ease and speed. I noticed I held my body in better alignment and noticed when it was off more quickly. I noticed I felt more energized and complete after a NIA practice.
I notice the joy and the thoroughness of a workout all the while feeling nurtured and safe while doing it. It is the best way to break a sweat I've ever experienced and it leaves me feeling GREAT. Sherry is a MASTER teacher. She's one of the best things Anchorage has to offer!"
"Hi Sherry, Thanks for the opportunity to let you know what NIA has done for me. I was looking for something I could do with a class that I would truly enjoy. Your NIA class is that. Since I started I have more strength in my body as well as stamina. What I have noticed most right now is the flexibility in my hips and low back. Sitting all day is very tough on both and I have really enjoyed the movement I have. Also, I have had less low back pain which is a real plus. Keep dancing and spreading your joy. Thank you."
